With our curiosity piqued and the site just a few hours old, we checked in with the NYC designers to find out why they’d embark on such a risky and not-obviously-design-related venture. What interested you in doing this? Tim: It was a small idea I had about a year ago, but I didn’t really know the ‘what’ or the ‘how. Jessie ran with the idea, and it really became something entirely different after that. Jessica: We were waiting in line for egg sandwiches at a deli in JFK en route to Art Basel when Tim mentioned an idea he had for a dating project. I instantly felt that doing a personal project around relationships was a great idea. We started throwing crazy, nutty ideas back and forth during the plane ride, and by the time we landed in Miami we had a pretty elaborate and crazy plan for “40 Days of Dating. What would it feel like to date a longtime friend for 40 days and nights? That was the challenge that two thirtyish New York City-based graphic designers, Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh, took on when they played a self-imposed dating game between March 20 and April 28, and recorded the experience. Although romance wasn’t in the cards, their audacious experiment generated a blog that triggered a storm of visual responses.
Their reasons for embarking upon the social experiment sound uncannily like the plot of When Harry Met Sally.

Due to the buzz around the project, we wanted to know more about 40 Days and how the pair turned it into a successful business adventure. In teaser videos for the 40 Days of Dating, Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman sat facing each other and remained expressionless as odd scenarios took place.
What prompted you and Walsh to start 40 Days of Dating? Having the boundaries of a project allowed us to take on that challenge. It really was a once—in—a—lifetime opportunity. Did you see this as an entrepreneurial feat or just a clever idea for public consumption? As creative people, we love the process of making something provocative that could potentially inspire and touch people.
We wanted to [first] approach the project with as much sincerity as possible. As designers, how did you prepare for the final outcome? Is that important in terms of making it? Jessica and I just put everything out there.

The duo, who have been friends for four years, decided to embark on a relationship “experiment” after finding themselves single at the same time. They settled on a day timeline, and agreed on six rules: seeing each other every day, going on three dates a week, completing a daily questionnaire, visiting a couples’ therapist every week, going on a weekend trip together and abstaining from dating, kissing or having sex with anyone else.
In an attempt to explore and hopefully overcome their fears and inadequacies, Tim and Jessica will go through the motions of a relationship for the next 40 days: the commitment, time, companionship, joys and frustrations.

We met on email in October Jessie worked for Print magazine in NYC , and they were featuring my work in the magazine. She emailed me to get some images. After an informal conversation on email, I Facebooked her and then I tried to stir up more casual conversation. From there, we started talking and hanging out more. We came up with 40 Days of Dating rather abruptly, not as a design project, but because we had a real question about our relationship problems and wanted to help each other.
Out of our three projects, definitely 12 Kinds of Kindness. We really grew as people and designers and supported each other along the way. We both have the same vision of the kind of work we want to put in the world. And we both have unique skills that help make the projects more robust.

40 Days of Dating—Your Passion Project
Over in New York, two close friends had decided to stage an experiment, dating for 40 consecutive days, and writing about the experience. Eighteen months later, and the pair are back, with a book about their experiment, and the aftermath. Now, I have to admit, two summers ago, I tried to get into 40 Days. I remember reading the first couple of days of the experiment, but struggling to get into it. I attributed it to dating overkill.
